Border
Since I arrived in La Española or Quisqueya, I was surprised to discover that between Haiti and the Dominican Republic there are multiple differences and similarities, which have brought them closer and further apart politically and socially since the founding of both nations. Sometimes, one believes that Haiti is a country far away from the Dominican Republic and that its humanitarian crisis is located on another continent and not on the same Caribbean island.
In the Dominican Republic, it is common to find Haitians living in abandoned buildings or in construction processes as well as in mine excavations. Being a cheap and unregulated workforce, accidents among Haitian workers are not usually counted. Many of them barely speak Spanish and have little educational level, so few of these Haitian workers are able to demand better working conditions, and surely, faced with the danger of losing their jobs, almost none would dare to do so.
The Haitian crisis is a regrettable fate for the nation that showed the way for the abolition of slavery in America and the independence of its countries.
